Biography

Born in Inner Mongolia, the young baritone Hongyu Chen graduated in 2017 with distinction at the University of Music Saar (Konzertexamen Doctor degree for singing in Germany) under the guidance of Eva Randová. He completed his Master's with the highest score at the Mannheim Opera School under the guidance of Rudolf Piernay.

As a multiple award winner of international competitions he attended among others the 53^rd Anton Dvorak International Singing Competition (Czech republic), the 18^th Ada Sari International Singing Competition (Poland), the 18^th Imrich Godin International Vocal Competition (Slovakia), the Concours de Chant Lyrique à Paris UPMCF (France), the 5^th International Singing Competition J. E. J. Reszkow (Poland) and the 23^rd International Singing Competition Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg in Germany.

His artistic career has been supported by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Wilhelm Müller Foundation, the Richard Wagner Foundation and the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation "Live Music Now". He performed at the Frankfurt Opera, at the Bayreuth Festspiele (Haus Wahnfried), at the Tiroler Festspiele, the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole, the Nationaltheater Weimar, the Theater Nordhausen and at the National Theatre of Szeged. His extensive concert engagements have taken Hongyu Chen to several European and Asian countries and led to collaborations with renowned orchestras such as the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Brandenburg State Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Lorraine and conductors including Christian Thielemann, Helmut Rilling, Gustav Kuhn, Heribert Beissel and Stefan Sanderling.

Since 2018 he is holding a teaching position at the Inner Mongolia Arts University in China and at the University of Szeged in Hungary and as guest professor, he is giving masterclasses in China and Europe.
